Civil Servants Can Take Part Time Jobs

In a reversed announcement, government employees and civil servants can breathe a sigh of relief as they now can take up part time job or work to supplement their full time income. The decision was announced by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Amirsham Aziz.

Amirsham is also the chief of Economic Planning Unit, EPU.

This comes as a 360 degree turning as 2 days ago, the Deputy Minister of the Human Resource Ministry, Datuk Noraini Abdullah rejected Cuepacs proposal for the government to allow civil servants to work part time after the working hours. Due to the increasing cost of living, Cuepacs suggested that a mean that will allow the government workers to earn extra income and ease their burden to be implemented. Taking part time job is seen as a sensible solution.

Productivity was said to be the main reason for the initial rejection. Additionally, civil servants are also subject to contractual agreement with JPA that they are not to be engaged with other outside job or activities.

However, the HR Minister Datuk S Subramaniam has asked the JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam) to study and re-evaluate the suggestion. Amirsham told the latest decision took account the increasing cost of living due to astronomical price hike of petrol and household goods.

At the moment, there are already employees with the government who are doing part time jobs but this is done behind the government’s back and without formal approval.
